How many journalists are imprisoned?

The number of imprisoned journalists worldwide stood at 221 in 2014 -- the second-worst tally on record. The number stood at 211 in 2013, and 2012 saw a record high of 232, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. In its annual census of imprisoned journalists, CPJ named China, Iran and Eritrea as the world's worst jailers of the press, with 44, 30 and 23 journalists behind bars in each country, respectively.
